Seventh Grade

Paul Houck My name is Paul Houck. I'm a native Oregonian, however I spent roughly the
last 10 years in Minnesota. I'm happy to be back where it snows seldomly rather
than often.
This is my 10th year teaching, and I have a background teaching 7-12 grades,
and subjects including literature, writing, social studies, geometry, algebra,
health, and PE. My passion is working with middle schoolers because they
still enjoy being kids, but they are also at a stage where they begin to think in
deep and complex ways.
This year, English students will learn grammar and vocabulary, and they will
sharpen comprehension skills by using inferences and context clues. They will
take typing to enhance their computer skills. They will learn elements of speech
and debate, and they will take part in both a formal speech and a formal debate.
They will write scripts and produce public service announcements and podcasts.
Finally, they will read two novels and analyze those novels as they fit into
specific themes. Students will read The Giver, by Lois Lowry (6th, 7th, and 8th),
and The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton (7th and 8th) or Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli (6th).
